Pre-Departure Orientation

PDO was 6/5 and 6/6, where I learned all of the rules of going with AFS. It was held at a camp about an hour and a half away from Albuquerque. Unfortunately, we had to sleep in these cabins that didn't have windows! There weren't any toilets (or mirrors!) and they didn't have electricity. I stayed in a cabin with Johanna (My host sister/Current exchange student) and Elise (Current exchange student from Norway). Let's just say.. That was an experience.

Host Family!

I recieved my information about my host family in Sweden! Although, I already knew who it was.. Johanna, (my current exchange student and future host sister) was excited to read about her family. Haha :) When they visited us during April, her family went to white sands and all took a picture together which was their AFS host family picture! I'm glad I got to see that!

First Post!

Hello all!

My name is Brigitte Perera. I am a 16 year old student attending Rio Rancho High School in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. I play soccer for my school, and joined the Thespian Society in May. I am also in photography, and orchestra where I am first chair viola. When I graduate high school to go to college, I am planning to study environmental sciences, as well as International involvement.

For the 2009 2010 school year, I will be studying abroad in Sweden. I am absolutely ecstatic about learning a new language! By taking classes there, I hope to see their outlook on the world in comparison to what I have learned growing up in the United States. This will be an amazing experience to help me understand another country’s view on the world as well as their culture. Though Sweden is quite diverse and open minded, I would love to bring a bit of my own American culture to them. This experience is one of a kind, and that not many people can say they have done. I really am excited and hope to learn as much as I can! When I get back I am hoping to be more open minded about things, and sharing what I have learned with all of my peers.

Unfortunately, this trip is very costly, and I need help with financing it. My parents and I have been saving up a lot of money for this because we all want me to enjoy this experience. My mother and father both took up second jobs to help me raise it. Sadly, my mother had to quit hers due to carpal tunnel, but my father is still doing his. I am getting a job this summer to raise more money, because I am still short a lot of money! I wasn’t able to get much from financial scholarships, which we were really depending on. I recently finished a fundraiser where I sold flower bulbs and received half of the profit! (Thank you to all who helped!) And I have been accepting donations as well.

I really need all the help I can get and would be greatful if you would, or have any friends or family who would as well.
